An Australian woman recently went viral after asking the public to guess her age — and the responses left her shocked. Emily, 36, from Sydney, revealed that most guesses ranged between 50 and 60, sparking a wider conversation about how social media and beauty standards distort perceptions of real life.
Emily shared her experience on TikTok, where viewers of all ages offered “wild” guesses. One person commented, “I’m 57, and I think you’re my age, maybe a few years younger,” while another wrote, “You’re in your mid-40s. It’s your grey hair, skin, and the fine lines around your eyes.”
The 36-year-old explained that she stopped dyeing her hair during lockdown, embracing her natural grey as part of feeling comfortable in her own skin. “I know most women my age won’t show their grey hair, but this is the truth,” Emily said. Her hair began greying at just 19.
Emily also revealed that she has never used Botox, rarely wears makeup, and has not undergone cosmetic procedures. She added that the bags under her eyes are simply a result of sleepless nights caring for her baby son.
Even after revealing her real age, many comments continued to overestimate it, with guesses ranging from the late 30s to mid-50s. Emily described the experience as both shocking and horrifying, pointing out that social media and media portrayals of beauty are often unrealistic.
Motivated by her experience, Emily launched a sleepwear brand, Dawn & Dusk Co., designed to help women feel comfortable and confident. “PJs are the ultimate gateway to comfort,” she said. “When a woman feels comfortable, everything else falls into place. My goal is to empower women to embrace their natural beauty at any age.”
Emily’s story highlights the pressures of modern beauty standards and the growing movement to embrace authenticity, natural aging, and self-confidence in a world dominated by filters and Photoshop.
