President Donald Trump has agreed to a two‑week ceasefire with Iran, but not before issuing one of his most dramatic warnings yet. Just hours before his deadline, Trump posted on social media: “a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again” unless Iran reopened the Strait of Hormuz and agreed to negotiations.
The ceasefire was confirmed after Iranian and U.S. officials reached a conditional agreement that Tehran would allow safe passage through the strategic strait. Trump wrote that the deal would “suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks” if Iran permitted the passage of vessels through Hormuz.
Trump said the United States received a 10‑point proposal from Iran which he called a “workable basis on which to negotiate.” He added on social media that *“we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning long‑term PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East.”
While the ceasefire was hailed by some as a step back from escalation, critics slammed Trump’s earlier rhetoric. The NAACP, in a rare move, called for immediate action under the 25th Amendment, saying: “This president is unfit, unwell, and unhinged… a threat to the entire nation and the world.”
Across Washington, political leaders reacted strongly. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said he was “glad Trump backed off and is desperately searching for any sort of exit ramp from his ridiculous bluster,” while others condemned the initial threats as dangerous and unstable.
The ceasefire — backed in part by Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts — buys time for further negotiations in Islamabad, but uncertainty remains over whether a long‑term peace can be achieved after weeks of intense conflict.
