On Tuesday morning, residents of Conakry, the capital of Guinea, reported sustained gunfire near the city’s central prison. According to eyewitness accounts, the shooting commenced shortly before 9 a.m. local time (09:00 GMT) and continued for over thirty minutes. The source and cause of the gunfire remain unclear.
Thierno Balde, an accountant working in the vicinity, described hearing the sounds of vehicles rapidly approaching, followed by automatic gunfire. His statement was consistent with reports from other local witnesses who confirmed the intensity and duration of the shooting.
Observers noted that the shooting occurred in an area not far from the presidential palace, but no official explanation has been provided regarding the incident or those involved.
Security measures were quickly implemented, as police and special forces established a blockade on the road leading to the prison. An AFP correspondent on the scene reported the presence of an armored vehicle stationed in front of the facility, indicating a strong security response.
Authorities have yet to release detailed information or confirm any casualties or arrests related to the event. Updates are expected as more information becomes available.
