Loren Schauers’ life changed forever in September 2019 while working as a laborer in Montana. What began as an ordinary shift ended in a catastrophic accident that cost him half his body and one arm.
The accident occurred when Loren drove a forklift off the side of a bridge, falling over 50 feet. The industrial truck crushed his lower body and one arm. Miraculously, he survived.
A rare procedure called a hemicorporectomy was required. This complex surgery involved amputating the lower half of his body, including the pelvis and lower limbs, as well as his crushed arm.
Doctors asked the ultimate question: “Do you want to live or die?” Loren chose to survive, despite the life-altering challenges ahead.
Life after the accident has not stopped Loren from living fully. He and his wife, Sabia, share their journey with hundreds of thousands of YouTube subscribers, documenting their daily life and plans for the future.
Friendships changed. Loren admitted some friends pulled away while others were supportive. “I got Sabia, that’s all I need,” he said. Sabia added: “Going through this together has strengthened our relationship.”
The question everyone asks: People are curious about Loren and Sabia’s intimacy, but they respect their privacy. Sabia said: “It’s very personal. We’re never going to answer. Our circumstances don’t give anyone the right to ask.”
Living with new routines: Loren has openly shared how he manages daily life, including his colostomy and nephrostomy tubes, which help him poop and pee. Sabia supports him fully, changing his colostomy bag and helping with showers.
Against all odds, Loren’s story is one of resilience, love, and determination. He continues to inspire people around the world with his courage and openness.
