Kristi Noem faced criticism from conservative commentator Meghan McCain after President Donald Trump announced her removal as Secretary of Homeland Security. Noem was shifted from the position to serve as Special Envoy for The Shield of Americas, following reports of dissatisfaction with her performance.
McCain called Noem a poor leader for the Department of Homeland Security, accusing her of prioritizing her appearance over the responsibilities of her office. McCain also highlighted concerns about a $220 million advertising campaign undertaken by the Department, comparing its cost unfavorably to the production budget of a single “Game of Thrones” episode. She suggested federal investigators should examine the expenditure to ensure proper use of funds.
Referring to Noem’s appearance, McCain made a comment about her use of hair extensions, which became a point of discussion among critics. McCain’s remarks were echoed by fellow conservative commentator Tomi Lahren, who criticized Noem for making her role a personal and visual distraction from the department’s mission. Lahren also referenced Noem’s previous tenure as Governor of South Dakota, citing actions such as the execution of one of her own dogs as further evidence of controversial priorities.
The decision to remove Noem from her Homeland Security position followed what was described as a difficult Congressional hearing. During the hearing, GOP Senator Thom Tillis sharply criticized Noem’s oversight of the Department. Following these developments, President Trump nominated Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma to lead the department.
These changes reflect ongoing tensions within the administration regarding homeland security leadership and strategy. Meanwhile, critics on the right have voiced skepticism about Noem’s continued role in government, suggesting her appointment to the Special Envoy position may serve more symbolic purposes than operational ones.
