Many men have noticed a line running along the underside of the scrotum and wondered what it actually is. Some people believe it is a scar or the result of an injury, but the real explanation is actually related to how the human body develops before birth.

The line is known as the scrotal raphe and it forms while a baby is developing in the womb. Early in pregnancy, male and female embryos look very similar and develop from the same basic structures.

As development continues, hormones cause the tissue to develop into male or female reproductive organs. In males, the tissue fuses together to form the scrotum, and the line that remains is what people see as the “stitch”.

This means the line is completely normal and is not caused by surgery, injury, or anything that happened later in life.

Many people only notice it later in life and are often surprised to learn that it has been there since before they were born.

Experts say it is simply a natural part of human anatomy and nothing to be concerned about.

The discovery has surprised many people online, with some saying they had always wondered what the line was but never asked.
