Susan DiLeo, a 65-year-old real-estate agent based in New York City, has invested more than $33,000 in cosmetic procedures, which she says have significantly improved both her career prospects and self-confidence. With 14 years of experience in the highly competitive Manhattan real estate market, DiLeo emphasized that while skills are vital, the image one projects during client interactions is equally important. Despite her age, she wanted her appearance to better reflect her energetic and active lifestyle. “I have a lot of energy, I work out, and I’m very active,” she said, noting that signs of aging such as bags under her eyes, skin laxity under her chin, and wrinkles were making her look older than she felt.

At 62, DiLeo decided to undergo several cosmetic treatments, starting with a near-complete facelift that cost approximately $28,000. This was followed by microneedling, laser treatments under her eyes, Botox injections, and an eyelid skin removal procedure often referred to as an “eye snip.” The additional minor treatments, including ongoing Botox maintenance, amounted to an estimated $5,000. She chose Dr. Kwak as her surgeon based on his successful work correcting a previous rhinoplasty for one of her daughters.

DiLeo explained that her motivation was not simply an attempt to look younger but to have her outward appearance better mirror how she feels internally. She highlighted that in a field where many clients are younger, appearing sharp and capable is essential to building trust. Working with younger clients, including those affiliated with Columbia University where she has referrals through various departments, has made her mindful of projecting confidence and technological savvy.

The procedures have helped DiLeo feel more comfortable and assured in professional settings, including social events where she often interacts with clients and colleagues in their 20s and 30s. She reported positive feedback from friends and acquaintances and is open about having undergone cosmetic work, noting that it has been empowering and has made a significant difference in both her professional and personal life.

DiLeo’s experience underlines the growing trend of older professionals investing in cosmetic enhancements as a tool to maintain a competitive edge in industries that place a premium on appearance and self-presentation.
