The Pentagon has asked the White House to approve a request for more than $200 billion to fund the ongoing war in Iran, according to reports. The request would then need approval from Congress.
The funding would go beyond the cost of current airstrikes and would mainly be used to expand production of precision weapons and replenish military stockpiles that have been heavily used during the conflict.
Reports say the war’s cost exceeded $11 billion within the first week alone. Military officials say thousands of strikes have quickly depleted certain weapons supplies.
However, the massive funding request may face serious challenges in Congress. Some lawmakers have already expressed concerns about the size of the request and the long term cost of the conflict.
Some White House officials reportedly believe Congress may not approve a package this large, especially with political divisions and budget concerns.
For comparison, the United States approved around $188 billion in aid for Ukraine over several years, while this request would fund a conflict that has only been ongoing for a few weeks.
The situation is still developing as lawmakers debate the costs and strategy of the war.
