A baby monkey in Japan that captured hearts online is now showing signs of an unexpected change. The young macaque, named Punch, had previously gone viral after struggling to fit in with other monkeys at his zoo enclosure.
Punch, a Japanese macaque living at the Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Garden near Tokyo, became famous after videos showed him clinging to a stuffed orangutan toy for comfort. Zookeepers gave him the plush companion after he was rejected by his mother shortly after birth.
The toy quickly became a symbol of the young monkey’s loneliness, as he was often seen carrying it everywhere around the enclosure. Images of Punch hugging the plush animal spread rapidly on social media and drew visitors from around the world to the zoo.
But recently, zookeepers noticed something encouraging. Punch has started interacting more with the other macaques and is slowly becoming part of the troop.
In recent observations, the young monkey has been seen climbing onto other monkeys, sitting near them, and even being groomed — all signs that he may finally be gaining acceptance among his peers.

Although Punch still keeps the stuffed toy close, especially while resting or sleeping, caretakers say he appears to rely on it less than before as his confidence grows.
For many people who followed the viral story online, the latest update has been a hopeful one, suggesting the once-lonely monkey may finally be finding his place among the group.
