In January 2017, what was meant to be a romantic gesture turned into a comical international mix-up for two University of Edinburgh students.
23-year-old Finlay McAfee flew from Edinburgh to Paris to surprise his girlfriend, 21-year-old Salma Saade, completely unaware that she had planned the exact same surprise and was flying to Scotland at nearly the same time.
The couple, who were both students at the University of Edinburgh, believed they were about to create a memorable romantic moment. However, their carefully orchestrated plans completely missed each other.
Unknowingly, they passed each other while traveling in opposite directions through the airport. Only after landing and exchanging messages did they realize the shocking twist: they were now in entirely different countries.
McAfee spent the night alone in a Paris hotel, bewildered, before immediately booking a return flight the following day.
Finally, their second attempt at a surprise worked — they reunited at a Scottish airport. The story quickly became a charming example of romantic timing gone hilariously wrong, highlighting that even the best-laid plans can have unexpected outcomes.
Their story continues to be shared widely on social media as a reminder that love sometimes comes with a side of comedy.
