Punch, a baby Japanese macaque born at Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan, became an internet sensation after a deeply emotional story of abandonment captured the world’s attention. Shortly after his birth, Punch was rejected by his mother, and zoo staff stepped in to care for him.

The reasons for the mother’s abandonment were complex. The zoo explained that it was partly due to the extreme weather conditions at the time of Punch’s birth, which created a stressful environment, and partly because Punch’s mother was inexperienced with motherhood as this was her firstborn.

Newborn Japanese macaques, like many primates, require close physical contact with their mothers to develop both physically and emotionally. At this early stage, babies rely on their mothers for warmth, comfort, and security.

They also need something to cling to in order to develop muscle strength and a sense of safety. With no mother around to provide this support to Punch, zoo staff tried various alternatives, including rolled-up towels, to help mimic the comfort a mother would offer. Ultimately, they found that a stuffed orangutan plush toy provided the emotional support and security that Punch needed to thrive.

However, as Punch grew, the zoo wanted him to integrate with other macaques to develop social skills. They introduced him to a group of young macaques, but this transition wasn’t easy. Videos have shown Punch being pushed around and dragged by the others.

While this behavior is regular social interaction in macaques , it’s still difficult to watch, especially knowing Punch was already struggling to adjust to life without his mother. For many viewers, these clips sparked an emotional reaction, highlighting Punch’s vulnerability in the face of these challenges.

Punch’s connection to the plush orangutan became symbolic of his journey. The stuffed toy became his lifeline, a source of comfort and attachment in the absence of the care he would have received from his biological mother.
