Rock legend Tommy DeCarlo, the lead vocalist of the band Boston, has died at the age of 60 following a short but devastating battle with terminal brain cancer.
The heartbreaking news was confirmed by his family on Monday, who shared a touching tribute on social media announcing his passing.
In a statement posted on Instagram, they wrote: “It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our dad, Tommy DeCarlo, on Monday, March 9, 2026. After being diagnosed with brain cancer last September, he fought with incredible strength and courage right until the very end.
“During this difficult time, we kindly ask that friends and fans respect our family’s privacy as we grieve and support one another.”
The family had previously spoken about his condition on a fundraising page set up to help cover medical costs after his diagnosis.
They explained that in late September, DeCarlo suffered a sudden brain hemorrhage and had to undergo an emergency craniotomy. During the operation, doctors discovered two melanoma tumors in his brain and another on his lung.
Although he initially recovered from the surgery and began treatment, he suffered another brain bleed before completing it and remained hospitalized from November 27 to December 27.
“Since then he has completed acute inpatient therapy and was back on track with treatments from his oncology team,” the family wrote at the time.
“Our dad is strong. He is a fighter. And he’s giving this battle everything he’s got — but he needs your help on this one.”
They also expressed gratitude for the support he had received throughout his illness.
“He is deeply grateful for the love, prayers and support from friends, family and fans around the world. It lifted him during the hardest moments and reminded him that he wasn’t fighting alone.
“If you can donate, share, or simply send your love his way, it means more to us than you’ll ever know.”
A GoFundMe page had been created to help the family manage the growing medical expenses, offering fans insight into DeCarlo’s health struggles during his final months.
DeCarlo joined Boston in 2007 after the band’s original lead singer, Brad Delp, died by suicide at the age of 55.
At the time, DeCarlo was 42 and working at Home Depot when he received an unexpected call from Boston founder Tom Scholz, who invited him to tour with the band.
He quickly became a central figure in the group, later contributing vocals to Boston’s 2013 album Life, Love & Hope, including the title track.
Boston has been performing for more than five decades and is best known for classic rock hits such as More Than A Feeling, Peace of Mind and Amanda.
