On Sunday, Mexico experienced extensive violence after a top cartel leader was killed in a security operation. Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, was killed, which triggered a series of retaliatory acts by cartel members across multiple states.

Reports and images show burnt-out buses, blocked highways, and numerous vehicles set on fire, particularly in the state of Jalisco, the cartel’s stronghold and the location where the leader was apprehended and killed. The violence extended beyond just Jalisco, with authorities establishing over 250 roadblocks in 20 Mexican states in efforts to control the unrest.

Popular tourist destinations such as Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco also saw disruptions; businesses were burned, vehicles were torched, and public transport was suspended. At Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta airports, many domestic and international flights were canceled as a result of the unrest, leaving travelers stranded and waiting in crowded terminals. The Mexican military and National Guard were deployed in affected areas to maintain order and prevent further escalation.

In response to the security situation, the US government advised its citizens in Mexico to remain indoors and shelter in place. The advice came amid ongoing concerns over the safety of foreign visitors and Mexican residents alike.

The government of Jalisco declared a code red due to the violence, with public transportation suspended to reduce risks to civilians. Photographs from various regions depict firefighters extinguishing flames on torched vehicles and streets deserted in the aftermath of the unrest.

Military personnel were seen on guard at key locations, including Guadalajara International Airport and public spaces in Acapulco. The National Guard’s presence was also noted outside the Attorney General’s office in Mexico City.

The wave of violence reflects the significant impact of the cartel leader’s death and highlights the ongoing challenges Mexico faces in managing organized crime and ensuring public security. Authorities continue their efforts to restore calm and prevent further retaliatory actions.
