A young woman’s life took a terrifying turn after what seemed like a normal meal with friends.

The 24-year-old, who had already survived cancer twice, never expected that a homemade dish would leave her fighting for her life just days later.

After eating food prepared by a friend, she initially thought nothing of it — despite noticing the taste was unusual. But soon, she began experiencing alarming symptoms that quickly worsened.

Within a short period of time, she struggled to swallow even water. What started as mild discomfort rapidly turned into something far more serious, forcing her to seek emergency medical care.

Doctors were initially unsure what was wrong. However, as her condition deteriorated, specialists eventually diagnosed her with botulism, a rare but dangerous illness caused by toxins that attack the nervous system.

The condition can lead to muscle paralysis and even affect breathing, making it potentially fatal without urgent treatment. In her case, the situation became so severe that she required intensive care and assistance to breathe.

The source was later linked to a homemade fermented seafood dish, which can create the low-oxygen conditions where the toxin develops if not prepared correctly.

Although extremely rare, experts say cases like this highlight how certain foods — if improperly handled — can pose serious health risks.

She is now recovering, but doctors say the road ahead could take months, as the body slowly repairs the damage caused to the nervous system.
