A night out that seemed like any other quickly turned into a life-threatening situation for a mother who woke up unable to move her legs.
Julia Anderson had been drinking heavily with friends before heading home and falling asleep in an awkward position. What she didn’t realize was that those few hours would trigger a serious medical emergency.
After passing out face down with her legs trapped underneath her body, she woke up the next morning unable to move. Her legs had swollen dramatically, leaving her confused and frightened.
Her mother quickly called for help, and she was rushed to the hospital where doctors diagnosed her with compartment syndrome — a dangerous condition caused by pressure building up in the muscles and restricting blood flow.
The situation escalated rapidly. Doctors were forced to perform emergency surgery to relieve the pressure and prevent further damage, as her muscles had already begun breaking down and releasing toxins into her body.
She spent weeks in hospital undergoing intensive treatment, including dialysis, blood transfusions, and a skin graft. At one point, there were serious concerns she could lose her legs entirely.
Even after leaving the hospital, the long-term effects remained. Years later, she still struggles with mobility issues and ongoing nerve damage from the ordeal.
Looking back, she has issued a warning to others about the risks of excessive drinking and simply “passing out” without considering body position or circulation.
What seemed like a harmless night ended up changing her life — and it’s a reminder of how quickly things can take a dangerous turn.
