Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been officially nominated for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, despite never publicly seeking the award. Zelensky has spent the past three years leading Ukraine through a full-scale war with Russia.
The nomination was submitted on January 16, 2026, by Professor Dag Øistein Endsjø of the University of Oslo. Endsjø said part of his motivation was to prevent what he described as “another despot, a great friend of Putin” from receiving the prize, widely interpreted as a reference to former President Donald Trump.
Trump has long expressed interest in the Nobel Peace Prize and reportedly attempted to pressure foreign leaders to submit his name. However, he has never received a nomination from a credentialed academic with formal authority to nominate candidates.
The nomination of Zelensky has gathered support from more than 300 eligible nominators from 33 countries, signaling broad international backing.
While the winner will not be announced until October 10, 2026, the nomination itself is already seen as a strong political statement, contrasting Zelensky’s leadership during a global conflict with Trump’s controversial actions in office.
The development has sparked debate online, with discussions focusing both on Zelensky’s accomplishments and the underlying political message behind his nomination.
