An Olive Garden server in Georgia says a life-changing $700 tip ended up costing her both the money and her job.

What began as an act of kindness from a customer has now sparked widespread outrage online, with social media users questioning how a generous gratuity turned into a devastating situation for a single mother.

The controversy centers around Brook Skyes, a waitress at an Olive Garden in Fayetteville, Georgia, who received the massive tip on May 31 while serving a regular customer.

Customer Leaves $700 on a $32 Bill

According to reports, the customer left a $700 tip on a bill totaling just $32.

The receipt reportedly included a handwritten message wishing Skyes a belated Mother’s Day and offering words of encouragement.

The note read:

“It’s been a while since we’ve seen you. Glad that we could catch you here. Here’s a little something to help you on your journey. Love and blessings.”

For Skyes, who is raising a four-year-old son with autism, the gesture initially felt like an incredible blessing during a difficult time financially.

Management Allegedly Refused To Release The Tip

According to Skyes’ mother, Buni Williams, restaurant management informed her daughter that the tip could not immediately be processed because company policy requires verification for unusually large gratuities.

Williams claims a manager instructed Skyes to write “0” on the tip line until the payment could be verified.

The uncertainty reportedly became frustrating after different managers allegedly gave conflicting timelines about when — or if — the money would become available.

One manager allegedly said the process would take a few days, while another reportedly suggested it could take months.

At one stage, management allegedly offered Skyes only 20 percent of the tip amount while the remainder stayed under review.

The Server Says She Was Fired The Next Day

The situation escalated dramatically the following morning.

According to Skyes and her family, she arrived at work only to be informed that her employment was being terminated.

Her mother claims the firing was connected to the emotional dispute surrounding the tip and says police were even called after Skyes became upset during conversations with management.

In a public statement, Skyes described the situation as emotionally and financially devastating.

“I was let go from my job under circumstances that I believe were retaliatory, despite my dedication and hard work.”

She also explained the pressure the situation placed on her family as a single parent.

“Every dollar matters, and losing both my job and the wages I worked for has placed a significant financial and emotional strain on my family.”

Olive Garden Responds To The Backlash

As outrage spread online, Olive Garden released a statement defending its actions.

The restaurant chain explained that tips exceeding $500 or unusually high compared to the bill amount are automatically flagged for fraud protection purposes.

According to the company, employees immediately receive 20 percent of the tip while the remaining balance is held until the payment is successfully verified.

Olive Garden also stated that the transaction was ultimately declined due to insufficient funds.

The company further denied that Skyes was terminated because of the tip itself.

Customer’s Version Raises More Questions

The controversy deepened after the customer who left the tip reportedly contacted Skyes’ family directly.

According to her mother, the customer claimed he initially saw smaller charges appear on his account rather than a single charge that included the full gratuity.

After learning online that Skyes had allegedly been fired and had not received the money, he reportedly froze his credit card.

Williams claims Olive Garden later attempted to process the larger $699 transaction after the card had already been frozen — causing the payment to fail.

If accurate, that sequence of events could explain why the restaurant ultimately received an insufficient funds response despite the customer allegedly intending to pay the full amount.

Social Media Erupts Over The Incident

The conflicting stories quickly fueled anger online.

Many social media users accused the restaurant of mishandling the situation and criticized the confusion surrounding the payment process.

One commenter wrote:

“A single mom gets a blessing and somehow ends up unemployed. Make that make sense.”

Others defended Olive Garden’s fraud prevention policy, arguing that businesses must verify unusually large transactions for security reasons.

Still, many people questioned whether the situation could have been handled more clearly and compassionately.

Why The $700 Tip Was Never Paid

At the center of the controversy is one key unanswered question: why the payment ultimately failed.

Olive Garden insists the tip was declined due to insufficient funds.

However, according to Skyes’ family and the customer, the transaction may only have failed because the card was frozen after concerns arose about how the situation was being handled.

For now, the former waitress remains without both the $700 tip and her job — while the story continues to spread across social media as people debate exactly what went wrong.
