Expert Says Bedroom Expectations Are Often Unrealistic
A doctor who specializes in men’s sexual health has revealed that many people have unrealistic expectations about how long sex should last, often due to portrayals in movies, pornography, and social media.
Dr. Philippa Kaye, a GP and regular television health contributor, says concerns about sexual performance are among the most common issues raised by male patients. Premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction remain two of the most frequently discussed problems.
What Counts as Premature Ejaculation?
According to Dr. Kaye, premature ejaculation is generally characterized by ejaculation occurring sooner than desired on a regular basis, causing distress or affecting relationships.
She explained that some men may develop the habit from an early age. Teenagers who learn to masturbate quickly to avoid being interrupted can unintentionally train themselves to reach climax faster, a pattern that may continue into adulthood.
Causes Can Vary
While some men experience the issue throughout their lives, others develop it later. Dr. Kaye says factors such as erectile dysfunction, prostate conditions, stress, anxiety, and other mental health concerns can all play a role.
In many cases, anxiety about maintaining an erection can create pressure that leads to rushing sexual activity, making premature ejaculation more likely.
The Average May Surprise You
One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding sex is how long penetrative intercourse is expected to last. Research has consistently found that the average duration is far shorter than many people assume.
Studies suggest that penetrative sex lasts about five to six minutes on average before ejaculation. Experts say this falls well within the normal range for most couples.
What Do Partners Actually Prefer?
Surveys have found that many partners consider five to ten minutes of penetrative sex to be satisfactory, not including foreplay. Preferences vary significantly from person to person, and there is no universal standard for what constitutes the “perfect” duration.
Health experts stress that sexual satisfaction is influenced by communication, intimacy, and mutual enjoyment rather than a specific time limit.
When to Seek Help
Doctors recommend speaking with a healthcare professional if premature ejaculation becomes persistent, causes emotional distress, or begins affecting relationships.
The condition is common and treatable, with options ranging from behavioral techniques and counseling to medical treatments when appropriate. Experts emphasize that occasional early ejaculation is a normal experience and usually not a cause for concern.
