Authorities have confirmed the cause of death for former “Alaskan Bush People” star Matt Brown following his death in Washington state at age 42.
According to the Okanogan County coroner’s office, Brown’s death was ruled a suicide. Officials also listed methamphetamine use and subsequent immersion in water as contributing factors.
Body Was Found After Search Efforts
Brown was found dead on May 30 after search efforts had been underway earlier that day. His brother, Bear Brown, later confirmed the tragic news in a social media video, saying the family had feared for Matt’s wellbeing for some time due to his long struggles with addiction and mental health.
Bear said he never expected his brother would take his own life.
Family Shares Emotional Statement
Following the discovery, the Brown family released a lengthy public statement remembering Matt as creative, intelligent and deeply curious about the world around him.
The family described him as a talented outdoorsman, artist and lifelong learner who openly spoke about addiction recovery and mental health during periods of sobriety.
Long Battle With Addiction and Mental Health
Matt Brown had publicly discussed his struggles with substance abuse for years and was reportedly estranged from parts of his family at different points in his life.
In their statement, the Brown family acknowledged the difficult chapters in Matt’s life while emphasizing that they did not want his legacy defined solely by his struggles.
One of the Original Stars of the Series
Matt was one of the original members of Discovery Channel’s “Alaskan Bush People,” which followed the Brown family’s unconventional lifestyle and survival-focused life in remote wilderness areas.
The show became a major reality television success after premiering in 2014.
Family Reflects on His Legacy
The Browns said Matt often tried to help others facing similar battles by speaking openly about addiction, recovery and emotional struggles. According to the family, he wanted people dealing with those issues to know they were not alone.
His father, Billy Brown, who died in 2021, had reportedly continued believing Matt could fully recover and rebuild his life.
A Difficult Loss for the Family
In their final tribute, the family described Matt as imperfect but deeply loved. They said they would remember his adventurous spirit, humor and fascination with nature rather than only the hardships he faced.
His death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from longtime viewers of the reality series and supporters who followed his recovery journey over the years.
