President Donald Trump reportedly used an elaborate decoy flight operation during his July trip to Türkiye after U.S. officials received what was described as a credible Iran-related threat against him.
According to reports from The Washington Post and The New York Times, Trump was publicly expected to leave Ankara aboard an older version of Air Force One. Instead, he was secretly transferred to a smaller military aircraft.
Air Force One Was Reportedly the Decoy
The unusual operation allegedly involved Trump being moved from his motorcade into a catering container, which transported him to a C-32A military aircraft away from public view.
The C-32A then flew Trump to the United Kingdom while the older Boeing 747 continued to serve as the apparent presidential aircraft. The deception was reportedly designed to make it difficult for anyone monitoring Trump’s movements to know which plane he was actually aboard.
Even Some Staff Reportedly Didn’t Know
The operation appears to have been kept extremely tight. Journalists traveling with the president reportedly believed they were aboard the aircraft carrying Trump and were instructed to keep the shades in the press cabin closed.
According to The Washington Post, some White House staff members also believed Trump was on the decoy aircraft. The president later appeared publicly in Britain while exiting that same plane, adding another layer to the deception.
Why the Sudden Change?
Trump had initially said he would leave Türkiye aboard the older Air Force One “for old time’s sake.” However, reports later linked the change in plans to security concerns involving Iran-aligned armed groups.
The incident came amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran and renewed concerns about threats against Trump. U.S. officials have previously warned that Iran represents a serious security concern for the president.
What Happened to the New Air Force One?
Trump had arrived in Türkiye aboard the newer Boeing 747-8 aircraft gifted to the United States by Qatar. After Trump was secretly flown to Britain on the C-32A, the newer aircraft was later used for his journey back to Washington.
The White House has defended the security measures surrounding the president, saying the United States uses “every tool at our disposal” to respond to foreign threats.
The reported operation offers a rare glimpse into just how complicated presidential travel can become when security officials believe a threat is credible. In this case, the most surprising element may be that Air Force One itself reportedly became part of the deception, allowing Trump to leave the country while journalists and even some staff believed he was still on board.
