Long before Donald Trump entered politics, Melania Trump was already facing questions about her relationship with the future president.

After the couple made their relationship public in 1999, critics often pointed to their 24-year age gap and Donald Trump’s wealth, leading to speculation that Melania was only with him because of his fortune.

During an interview with ABC News that year, Melania firmly rejected those claims.

“You know, the people, they don’t know me,” she said. “People who talk like this, they don’t know me.”

The Question That Sparked Her Response

The interviewer followed up by suggesting that people don’t often see “26-year-old supermodels on the arm of a 53-year-old car mechanic.”

Melania didn’t back away from the question.

“You know what, you can’t sleep or to hug or to talk with beautiful things, with beautiful apartment, beautiful plane, beautiful cars, beautiful houses,” she replied.

“You can’t do that. You could feel very empty.”

She concluded by saying:

“If somebody said, ‘You’re with the man because he’s rich and famous,’ they don’t know me.”

Their Relationship

Donald and Melania first met in New York in 1998.

The couple became engaged in 2004 before marrying in Palm Beach, Florida, in January 2005.

The following year, they welcomed their son, Barron Trump, who is Donald Trump’s fifth child.

Still One of the Most Discussed Political Marriages

More than two decades after that interview, Donald and Melania Trump remain one of the most talked-about couples in American politics.

Throughout Donald Trump’s business career, two presidential terms and numerous public controversies, Melania has largely stayed out of the political spotlight while continuing to face public curiosity about their relationship.

Her comments from 1999 continue to resurface online whenever discussions about the couple’s marriage re-emerge, with many pointing to her direct response as one of her clearest public statements on the subject.
