Lauryn Hill received one of the night’s highest honors at the BET Awards 2026, accepting the Living Legend Icon Award after an unforgettable tribute featuring some of the biggest names in music. The celebration brought together artists from multiple generations to recognize Hill’s lasting influence on hip-hop, R&B, and soul.

All-Star Lineup Celebrates a Music Icon

The tribute began with Ice Cube introducing Hill as “one of the greatest voices in Black music history” before a series of performances highlighted songs that helped define her career.

The War & Treaty opened with a heartfelt rendition of “His Eye Is on the Sparrow,” a nod to Hill’s appearance in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. SZA and Doechii then performed the Fugees classic “Ready or Not,” with Tierra Whack, Tems, Doja Cat, Nas, Lizzo, Rapsody, Queen Latifah, Common, and several members of the Marley family joining throughout the medley.

Surprise Performance From Lauryn Hill

Following the tribute, Hill surprised the audience by taking the stage herself to perform “Ex-Factor.” She revealed she had not originally planned to perform but decided to step in after learning someone involved in the tribute had withdrawn.

Ice Cube then returned to present Hill with the Living Legend Icon Award, prompting a standing ovation from the audience.

A Message About Purpose and Legacy

During her acceptance speech, Hill reflected on using her music to represent the dignity of Black communities and encouraged artists to remain true to themselves, even when doing so is uncomfortable.

She also spoke about embracing individuality, telling the audience that people do not need to look, sound, or think alike for their differences to be meaningful. Hill closed her remarks by thanking those who have continued to support her throughout her career.

Closing the BET Awards

Hill brought the ceremony to an emotional conclusion with a live performance of “Everything Is Everything,” ending a night dedicated to celebrating her groundbreaking impact on music.

The BET Awards also honored Teyana Taylor with the Icon of the Year Award, while veteran music executive Sylvia Rhone received the Ultimate Icon Award, recognizing her decades of contributions to the music industry.

Why This Tribute Stood Out

Unlike many award show tributes, BET’s celebration of Lauryn Hill showcased not only her greatest hits but also the artists whose careers have been shaped by her work. The diverse lineup demonstrated how Hill’s influence continues to span generations, making her one of the most respected figures in contemporary music.
