A cow named “Melania” has become an unexpected talking point at President Donald Trump’s Great American State Fair after students participating in the event’s livestock exhibition revealed they named the animal after First Lady Melania Trump.
Students Explain the Name
Piper Stolipher, a member of the National FFA Organization, told The Washington Post that she and fellow students were looking for patriotic names to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary.
According to Stolipher, they chose “Melania” because it is the first lady’s name and felt the cow’s coloring resembled Melania Trump’s hair. She said the name simply “fit” the animal they were presenting at the fair.
A First Visit to Washington
Beyond showcasing livestock, Stolipher said she was excited to visit Washington, D.C., for the first time and experience the nation’s capital during the Semiquincentennial celebrations.
The Great American State Fair has featured exhibits from across the country as part of events marking the United States’ 250th anniversary.
Fair Faces Mixed Reception
While livestock exhibits have attracted strong interest, the broader event has faced several challenges. Periods of extreme heat and heavy rain forced temporary closures, while power outages disrupted some attractions, including a Ferris wheel and food vendors.
Despite those setbacks, President Trump praised the fair on Truth Social, describing it as a success and comparing it favorably to previous administrations. His post celebrated the turnout and questioned whether former Presidents Barack Obama or Joe Biden could have organized a similar event.

Although the cow’s name generated social media attention, it also highlighted the role organizations like the National FFA play in introducing young people to agriculture through educational competitions and livestock exhibitions.
