New details have emerged about how urban climbers Angela Nikolau and Ivan Kuznetsov allegedly gained access to the top of the Empire State Building before carrying out their headline-making climb. Prosecutors say the pair secretly remained inside the landmark overnight before making their way onto the building’s antenna the following morning.

According to reports, the couple purchased admission tickets on July 1 before allegedly hiding inside the building after visitors had left. Investigators say security cameras later captured them accessing a restricted hatch near the observation deck early the next morning, allowing them to reach the skyscraper’s upper levels.

Security Breach Under Investigation

Authorities allege the pair exited through a secured area on the 104th floor, where a damaged lock was later discovered, before climbing onto the building’s antenna nearly 1,500 feet above Manhattan. During the stunt, they unfurled a banner and were photographed appearing to celebrate an engagement.

The New York Police Department’s Emergency Service Unit responded after receiving reports of the unauthorized climb. Officers reportedly had to wait until the antenna’s broadcasting equipment was powered down before safely approaching the climbers because of the potential danger posed by high-frequency radio transmissions.

Facing Multiple Criminal Charges

Following their arrest, Nikolau and Kuznetsov were charged with burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, criminal trespass, criminal tampering, disorderly conduct, and possession of burglar’s tools. They have since been released under supervision and are scheduled to return to court in late August.

Reports have also raised questions about the proposal itself. According to ABC News, Nikolau’s father reportedly told the outlet that the couple may already be legally married, suggesting the proposal could have been staged as part of the stunt. Neither climber has publicly confirmed that claim.

Viral Stunt Sparks Security Questions

The incident has renewed concerns about security at one of New York City’s most recognizable landmarks. Investigators are expected to review how the pair were allegedly able to remain inside the building unnoticed and gain access to restricted areas.

While the dramatic climb generated millions of views online, officials have emphasized that unauthorized climbs of skyscrapers pose serious risks to both participants and emergency responders. The case is likely to prompt further reviews of security procedures at major tourist attractions across the city.
