Why Rosie O’Donnell Walked Away at the Height of Her Career
Rosie O’Donnell has revealed the financial milestone that convinced her it was time to leave The Rosie O’Donnell Show after six successful seasons.
In a recent interview with Page Six, the comedian and television host said she decided to step away once she learned she had $100 million in savings. For O’Donnell, that figure represented financial security rather than a reason to keep working.
Choosing Family Over Another Big Payday
O’Donnell explained that once she felt she had enough money to support her family and pursue charitable giving, her priorities shifted toward spending more time with her children.
She said she wanted to be present for everyday family moments, including school events and sports games, instead of continuing the demanding schedule of a daily television program.
Turning Down Another $100 Million
According to O’Donnell, she also declined an offer reportedly worth $100 million to extend her contract for two more years.
She said accepting even more money no longer made sense because she already had everything she felt she needed. O’Donnell added that she has never understood why some wealthy people continue chasing larger fortunes instead of focusing on helping others.
Looking Back on Her Talk Show Years
During the interview, O’Donnell also reflected on some of the memorable guests who appeared on her show between 1996 and 2002. She named Barbra Streisand among her favorite interviews and praised Martin Short as one of the funniest and most entertaining guests she ever hosted.
She also recalled that Keanu Reeves, despite being someone she greatly admires, was initially one of her quietest guests, joking that she once had to remind him it was a talk show. O’Donnell noted that Reeves later became much more comfortable during future appearances.
