Banner Raises Questions Over FIFA Rules
Following the final whistle, television footage showed several Argentina players holding and displaying the banner during celebrations with supporters.
According to FIFA and the International Football Association Board (IFAB), players are prohibited from displaying political, religious, or personal messages during official matches or celebrations. The Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as Las Malvinas, have been the subject of a sovereignty dispute for generations.
In 1982, Britain and Argentina fought a brief war over the islands after Argentine forces invaded the territory. The conflict claimed the lives of more than 900 people, including 255 British service personnel, before British forces regained control.
Today, the islands remain a British Overseas Territory, and the overwhelming majority of residents have repeatedly expressed their wish to remain under British sovereignty.

Whether the players face punishment will likely depend on FIFA’s interpretation of the banner under its disciplinary regulations governing political messaging.
