Savannah Guthrie Is Back on ‘Today’
Savannah Guthrie returned to the Today show on July 20, marking her first appearance since a frightening security incident at NBC’s Rockefeller Plaza studios last week.
She opened Monday’s broadcast alongside Sheinelle Jones, who filled in for Craig Melvin while he takes a previously scheduled family vacation.
Intruder Incident Shook the Studio
The incident occurred on July 16, when authorities say a man entered an unauthorized area of the Today show studio and confronted Melvin. According to prosecutors, the suspect allegedly used racial slurs and asked to see Al Roker before being detained by security.
No one was injured, and NBC confirmed the individual was taken into custody without further incident.
Suspect Faces Hate Crime Charges
The suspect, identified by prosecutors as Andrew Truelove, has been charged with burglary as a hate crime and menacing as a hate crime. A temporary order of protection has been issued for both Melvin and Roker, and the case is scheduled to return to court later this week.
If convicted, the suspect could face a lengthy prison sentence.
Melvin Reassures Viewers
During Friday’s broadcast, Melvin thanked viewers for their concern and assured everyone that he was safe. NBC also emphasized that it is cooperating with law enforcement while reviewing its security procedures to help prevent similar incidents.
The network reiterated that the safety of its employees, guests, and visitors remains a top priority.
Guthrie Preparing for a New Project
Although Guthrie has returned to the anchor desk, she recently revealed she will soon take additional time away from Today to film a new television project based on the popular word game Wordle.
For now, her return offers a sense of normalcy after an unsettling week for the morning show and its staff.
