For decades, Oprah Winfrey has been one of the most recognizable names in television. But according to the media icon, the name the world knows today was actually the result of a childhood mix-up.

During an appearance on Keke Palmer’s Baby, This Is Keke Palmer podcast, Winfrey revealed that her birth certificate lists her name as Orpah, not Oprah.

A Biblical Name With an Unexpected Twist

Winfrey explained that Orpah is a biblical name from the Book of Ruth in the Old Testament. Her aunt chose the name, but people in her hometown struggled to pronounce and spell it correctly.

Instead of saying “Orpah,” many people began calling her Oprah, swapping the position of the letters “r” and “p.” The nickname quickly stuck.

She Didn’t Choose the Change

Winfrey said she never intentionally changed her name.

“It wasn’t my decision,” she explained, adding that she was just a child when people began using the incorrect pronunciation. Over time, Oprah became the name everyone recognized, even though her birth certificate still read Orpah.

She Didn’t Discover the Difference Until Years Later

The television legend has said she didn’t realize her legal name was different until she was around 20 years old. By then, she had already begun building her public identity, making a change back to Orpah unrealistic.

She also joked that “Harpo,” the name of her production company, is simply “Oprah” spelled backward, something that likely wouldn’t have worked the same way had her original name remained unchanged.
