A memorable audition changed everything

More than a decade after Crazy, Stupid, Love became a fan favorite, the film’s directors have revealed the unexpected moment they knew Emma Stone was perfect for the role.

Speaking to PEOPLE for the movie’s 15th anniversary, directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa said Stone stood out because she stayed completely relaxed while auditioning alongside Ryan Gosling.

Ryan Gosling unintentionally tested every actress

According to the directors, several talented actresses auditioned with Gosling, but many became noticeably nervous once they were in the room with the Hollywood star.

Stone, however, reacted differently. When Gosling accidentally stumbled over one of his lines, she immediately joked, “You’re killing this. You’re doing great,” leaving everyone in the room laughing.

The chemistry was impossible to ignore

That playful exchange instantly convinced the filmmakers they had found their Hannah Weaver.

The directors said Stone’s confidence, quick wit, and natural chemistry with Gosling made the decision easy, setting the stage for one of modern Hollywood’s most beloved on-screen partnerships.

A friendship that continued beyond one film

The pairing proved so successful that Stone and Gosling reunited for Gangster Squad in 2013 before starring together again in the Oscar-winning musical La La Land.

Their effortless chemistry has since become one of the most recognizable acting partnerships of the past decade.

One scene was almost entirely improvised

The directors also revealed that one of the movie’s most memorable moments, when Hannah and Jacob spend the night talking instead of rushing into romance, relied heavily on improvisation.

They allowed the cameras to roll for hours, encouraging Stone and Gosling to be themselves rather than strictly following the script. Much of what audiences see in the final film came from those spontaneous conversations.

A performance that still stands out

Looking back, Ficarra and Requa said Stone’s audition made it obvious she was destined for the role.

Fifteen years later, they remain proud of the film and believe the genuine connection between Stone and Gosling remains one of its biggest reasons for lasting popularity.
