Nearly two years after the tragic death of Liam Payne, newly reported court documents have shed more light on the final hours before the former One Direction star died after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The singer died on October 16, 2024, after falling from the third-floor balcony of the CasaSur Palermo Hotel. Argentine authorities later ruled that Payne died from multiple traumatic injuries (polytrauma) sustained in the fall.

Two Women Describe Their Time With Payne

According to court documents reported by the Mail on Sunday, two women who were with Payne earlier that day told investigators they spent several hours in his hotel room before leaving shortly before his death.

The women alleged that they had been invited to the room during the morning and that they remained there for around two hours. They also claimed Payne later became upset during a dispute over payment after an international bank transfer reportedly failed.

According to their statements, Payne allegedly damaged personal property inside the hotel room, including smashing a watch and punching the television. The women also told investigators that Payne later apologized before they returned to collect belongings they had left behind.

The documents reportedly indicate they left the hotel room at around 4 p.m., with Payne’s death occurring just over an hour later.

Autopsy Findings

An official autopsy concluded that Payne died from polytrauma, meaning multiple severe injuries caused by the fall.

A toxicology report released during the investigation also found the presence of cocaine and other substances in his system at the time of his death.

Authorities spent months interviewing hotel employees, witnesses, and others who had interacted with Payne as part of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

His Son Will Inherit His Estate

Payne is survived by his son Bear, whom he shared with singer Cheryl.

Court documents released earlier this year showed that because Payne did not leave a will and was not married or in a civil partnership at the time of his death, his estate, estimated at around £24.3 million, is expected to pass to his son under applicable inheritance laws.

The singer’s death prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans and fellow musicians around the world, with many continuing to remember his contributions to One Direction and his solo music career.
