A Life-Changing Tragedy
Travis Barker spent more than 13 years avoiding air travel after surviving a devastating plane crash that left him with severe injuries and lasting emotional trauma.
In September 2008, the Blink-182 drummer was one of only two survivors after a private jet crashed during takeoff in South Carolina. Barker suffered burns to about 65% of his body and underwent 27 surgeries during his recovery. Four people, including both pilots and two passengers, lost their lives.
PTSD Changed the Way He Traveled
Following the crash, Barker developed post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and an intense fear of flying. Rather than canceling his music career, he found another way to continue touring with Blink-182.
For years, Barker relied on tour buses, trains, and ships to travel, even for international performances.
Crossing the Atlantic by Ship
Traveling overseas became a lengthy journey. Barker previously explained that he would spend six days on a bus traveling from Los Angeles to New York before boarding the Queen Mary 2 for an 11-day voyage across the Atlantic to the United Kingdom.
The journey could take 17 days, compared with less than 11 hours on a direct flight.
His bandmate Mark Hoppus praised Barker’s determination, saying the demanding trip showed just how committed he was to performing for fans despite his fear of flying.
Some Tours Were Impossible
Although Barker’s travel arrangements allowed him to perform in Europe, they were not practical for every destination. In 2013, he was forced to miss Blink-182’s Australian tour because traveling there without flying was not feasible.
At the time, Barker said he still had not recovered emotionally from the crash and gave the band his support to continue the tour with another drummer if necessary.
Returning to the Skies
Barker eventually took a major step forward in 2021, when he flew again for the first time since the crash. He later credited his wife, Kourtney Kardashian, with helping him overcome his fear.
By 2023, Barker revealed he had flown dozens of times and said her encouragement played a key role in rebuilding his confidence and allowing him to enjoy touring and traveling once again.
A Story of Recovery
Barker now reflects on his journey in the documentary Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear, where he discusses the physical and emotional challenges he faced after the crash.
His experience has become an example of resilience, showing how recovery from trauma can take years, but that meaningful progress is possible with time, support, and determination.
