Cause of Death Confirmed

The cause of death for former Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke has been revealed following his death at the age of 29.

The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner determined that Clarke died from the effects of heroin and cocaine, classifying his death as an accident, according to the medical examiner’s findings released Friday.

Found Unresponsive at Home

According to the medical examiner, emergency responders found Clarke unresponsive in a bedroom at a home in Los Angeles County on May 11. He was pronounced dead shortly after paramedics arrived.

An examination was conducted the following day, but the official cause and manner of death were not certified until August 7.

NBA Community Mourns

Clarke’s death was initially announced by his agency, Priority Sports, which described him as a gentle and deeply supportive person who had made a lasting impression on teammates, friends, and family.

The Memphis Grizzlies also expressed their grief, remembering Clarke as an outstanding teammate whose impact extended beyond basketball and into the Memphis community.

A Promising Basketball Career

Clarke was selected with the 21st pick in the 2019 NBA Draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder before being traded to Memphis. He quickly became an important part of the Grizzlies’ young core because of his athleticism, energy, and efficiency around the basket.

Before reaching the NBA, Clarke played college basketball at San Jose State and Gonzaga, where he became one of the country’s most highly regarded players.
