LEGO is one of the most recognizable toy brands in the world, but many people don’t know what the name actually means. The story behind it is simpler — and more meaningful — than you might expect.

The name LEGO comes from two Danish words: “leg godt.” In Danish, this phrase means “play well.” The company was founded in Denmark in 1932, and the name reflects its original philosophy.

Founder Ole Kirk Kristiansen wanted to create toys that encouraged imagination and creativity. The idea of “playing well” wasn’t just about fun — it was about learning and building skills.

Interestingly, the word LEGO also resembles a Latin word meaning “I put together” or “I assemble.” The company later discovered this coincidence, but it was never the original intention.

Over the decades, LEGO grew from a small wooden toy workshop into a global empire of plastic bricks, theme parks, movies, and video games. Yet the meaning of its name still reflects its core values.

Today, millions of children and adults continue to “play well” with the colorful bricks — often without realizing the powerful message hidden in the name.
