Chilean filmmaker Matías Bize, known for his award-winning film ‘The Life of Fish,’ is preparing to release his new dramedy ‘The Last Stand’ (‘Aquí Me Bajo Yo’), which will be showcased at the 9th Málaga Festival Fund & Co-Production Event (MAFF) in March 2026. This project marks the first fiction feature for Santiago-based production company Cubho Audiovisual.
The film stars Jaime Vadell, a veteran actor recognized for his roles in Pablo Larraín’s ‘El Conde’ and ‘The Club,’ as well as Rodrigo Bastidas and Milena Bastidas. Vadell, who received Chile’s National Arts Award in 2025, leads a cast exploring an intimate family drama.
‘The Last Stand’ is adapted from a 2025 Chilean stage play by Elena Muñoz. The narrative centers on a grandfather who decides to end his life on his terms during a stormy night, prompting a tense reunion with his estranged son and granddaughter. The story delves into themes of grief, guilt, resentment, and the possibility of reconciliation among three generations.
The screenplay has been co-adapted by Muñoz alongside Raimundo and Milena Bastidas, who previously collaborated on the Amazon series ‘Sin Frenos.’ The writers emphasized their close-knit collaborative process, reflecting their own generational roles within the story’s family dynamic.
Bize, whose previous work often focused on themes such as love, separation, and childhood within confined settings, explained that this project represents a thematic shift toward the end of life. He described the film as an opportunity to concentrate on a well-crafted script and strong performances, simplifying production to focus on the story’s emotional core.
Production on ‘The Last Stand’ is scheduled to begin in August 2026 with a planned release in 2027. Nicholas Hooper H., known for executive producing the award-winning documentary ‘The Eternal Memory,’ is producing the film alongside Cubho Audiovisual founders Isidora Fajardo, Pablo Cuturrufo, Raimundo Bastidas, and Hooper himself. Cubho aims to secure private financing for production and explore minority co-production opportunities with Argentina, Spain, and Germany for post-production and distribution.
Cubho Audiovisual was established in 2020 in Santiago and focuses on creating projects that emphasize strong storytelling and collaborative creativity. ‘The Last Stand’ is expected to follow a restrained production model similar to Bize’s earlier films, emphasizing time- and space-concentrated narratives.
