John Alford, a British actor recognized for his roles in popular television series during the 1980s and 1990s, has died while in prison. His legal surname was Shannon, although he was professionally known as Alford. Authorities confirmed that Alford passed away on March 13, 2026, in custody. An official spokesperson from the prison service stated that the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation, as is standard procedure with all deaths in custody.
Alford rose to prominence through his roles in the television shows “Grange Hill” and “London’s Burning.” His career experienced significant setbacks following legal troubles, beginning with a conviction related to supplying drugs to an undercover reporter, which led to his dismissal from “London’s Burning.”
In 2024, Alford faced charges linked to sexual offenses involving two teenage girls. The allegations dated back to 2022 and included accusations of assault and rape. One of the teenagers, who was 14 at the time, testified that Alford raped her twice in different parts of a residential property after consuming vodka together. Alford consistently denied all accusations, both before and after his conviction.
He was convicted in September 2025 and subsequently sentenced in January 2026 to eight years and six months in prison. At the time of his death, Alford was 54 years old.
The details of his death have not been publicly disclosed, and the ongoing investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will aim to establish the circumstances surrounding it. Alford’s death marks the end of a notable but troubled life after a career in British television was overshadowed by multiple arrests and serious criminal convictions.
