Health officials have confirmed the first known case of a more severe strain of mpox in New York City, prompting renewed attention around the virus.
According to the city’s health department, the case involves a strain known as “clade I,” which is considered more serious than the version seen in previous outbreaks.
The individual had recently traveled to Europe and is currently receiving medical care while remaining in isolation.
Officials emphasized that, despite the severity of this strain, there is no known local transmission linked to this case.
They also stated that the overall risk to the public remains low at this time.
Mpox typically begins with flu-like symptoms before developing into a rash that can cause painful lesions and, in some cases, scarring.
The virus spreads primarily through close physical contact, including contact with infected skin, bodily fluids, or contaminated materials.
Health experts are urging individuals at higher risk to consider vaccination, particularly those who may be traveling or in close-contact environments.
While this case has raised concerns due to the strain involved, officials continue to monitor the situation closely and stress that widespread risk is currently limited.
