Today show co‑anchor Savannah Guthrie has opened up for the first time about the moment her life changed when she learned her mother, Nancy Guthrie, was missing. The emotional sit‑down with longtime friend and Today colleague Hoda Kotb aired in a two‑part interview on Today this week.
On February 1, Savannah received a distressing phone call from her sister Annie while she was at home preparing for the day. “Is everything OK?” Savannah asked. When her sister said “No… Mom’s missing,” the shock was immediate and overwhelming. Savannah described the chaos and disbelief that followed as the family realized something was seriously wrong.
Investigators believe Nancy, 84, was taken from her Tucson, Arizona home in the early hours after surveillance footage captured a masked individual near her front door. Nancy’s phone, purse and other belongings were still in the house when family and deputies arrived. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI continue to investigate the case, which is being treated as a suspected abduction.
Savannah said she and her siblings initially thought their mother might have had a medical emergency, interpreting the open back doors and disorder around the home as a possible stretcher being used. But those assumptions quickly dissolved when they realized Nancy had left none of her personal items.
In the interview, Guthrie reflected on the emotional toll of not knowing what happened to her mother. She described waking up at night imagining the fear her mother might have experienced and pleaded with anyone who has information to come forward. The Guthrie family has offered a $1 million reward for information leading to Nancy’s safe return, and the FBI has also posted a reward.
Nancy was last seen on January 31, 2026, and reported missing the next day after she did not show up for a planned engagement. Authorities say evidence at the home indicates she did not leave voluntarily, and her disappearance has drawn national attention with no confirmed sightings or arrests.
Savannah took a brief hiatus from her Today duties after her mother’s disappearance but has since returned to the show. In her first televised interview, she expressed hope that someone will come forward, emphasizing that even small details could help bring her mother home.
