James Tolkan, best known for his roles in Back to the Future and Top Gun, has died at the age of 94.
According to reports, Tolkan died peacefully at his home in Saranac Lake, New York. No cause of death was publicly announced.
Tolkan was widely recognized for playing the strict vice principal Gerald Strickland in the Back to the Future films. His character became one of the most memorable authority figures in the franchise.
He also played Commander Tom “Stinger” Jardian in Top Gun, where he appeared alongside Tom Cruise and other cast members in the iconic 1986 film.
Tolkan had a long career in film, television, and theater, appearing in movies such as Serpico, Dick Tracy, and WarGames, and he was also part of the original Broadway cast of Glengarry Glen Ross.
Before becoming an actor, he served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and later studied acting in New York under famous acting teachers Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg.
Despite often playing strict and intimidating characters on screen, colleagues described him as kind and generous in real life.
Tolkan is survived by his wife of more than 50 years. Fans and colleagues have shared tributes, remembering him as a memorable character actor who appeared in some of Hollywood’s most iconic films.
