Tiger Woods has made his first public remarks after being arrested on a DUI charge last week following a car crash in Jupiter Island, Florida.
In a statement shared on social media Tuesday, Woods said he plans to step away to seek treatment and focus on his health. “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery,” he wrote.
Woods added, “I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time.”
The incident occurred as Woods attempted to pass a flatbed truck at a high rate of speed but had to swerve to avoid oncoming traffic, hitting the vehicle. Police noted signs of impairment, though a breath test did not show alcohol. Authorities said he appeared affected by some type of medication or drug.
This marks Woods’ second DUI arrest since 2017. He was booked and released from jail Friday, and his mugshot showed bloodshot eyes.
The crash comes just before the 2026 Masters, raising questions about his participation. Woods recently returned to competitive golf after a roughly 20-month absence, playing in the TGL Finals in late March.
The PGA Tour issued a statement emphasizing Woods’ health and well-being, saying, “Tiger continues to have our full support as he takes this important step.”
Woods has also dealt with multiple injuries over the past years, including lumbar disk replacement surgery in 2025 and a ruptured Achilles in March 2025, which he says have made recovery increasingly difficult.
