A late-night shooting near the University of Iowa has left at least three students injured, following what authorities say began as a large street fight in downtown Iowa City.
Police were called to the 100 block of East College Street around 1:46 a.m. on Sunday, after reports of a major altercation near a busy nightlife area filled with bars and restaurants.
When officers arrived, they reportedly heard gunfire still taking place and quickly discovered multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds.
The University of Iowa later confirmed that three of the injured victims are students, while other individuals were also hurt in the incident. The total number of victims has not been fully confirmed, but at least five people were taken to hospital for treatment.
Officials have stated that one person is in critical condition, while the remaining victims are reported to be stable. Their identities have not been released.
University President Barb Wilson expressed concern for those affected, saying the campus community is deeply shaken and confirming that support services are being made available to students.
Early reports suggest the shooting happened during a large group fight that escalated rapidly, though investigators have not yet confirmed what triggered the violence.
Police have not made any arrests so far and are currently reviewing video footage and seeking witnesses as part of an ongoing investigation.
Authorities also stressed that there is currently no evidence suggesting students were specifically targeted, though the situation remains under active review.
The area was temporarily shut down overnight as emergency crews responded, with officials urging anyone with information to come forward.
