A grieving widow is speaking out after her husband fell critically ill just hours after taking his first dose of Ozempic — a widely used medication that has surged in popularity in recent years.
Rob Briggs, 55, had been prescribed the drug as part of his medical care. Living with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1, a rare condition that can lead to tumors, ulcers, and other complications, he was also at risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes.
After consulting with his doctor and undergoing routine tests, Briggs was cleared to begin treatment.
But what happened next left his family in shock.
A Rapid Decline
According to his wife, Lesley, Rob became severely ill within just 24 hours of taking his first dose.
“I couldn’t believe it,” she said. “Before I knew it, he was fighting for his life.”
He was rushed to hospital, where his condition initially appeared to stabilize. At one point, he even reassured his wife that he felt like he was improving.
But the situation quickly took a devastating turn.
Rob suffered internal bleeding and went into cardiac arrest. Although doctors were able to briefly revive him, the lack of oxygen caused severe brain damage.
Faced with an impossible decision, Lesley ultimately chose to turn off his life support.
Questions Without Clear Answers
No post-mortem examination was conducted, meaning it remains unclear whether Ozempic played any role in his sudden decline.
However, the tragedy has raised difficult questions for his family — and prompted a warning to others.
“My view is that there is not enough known about these treatments,” Lesley said. “People need to consider all the risks.”
She urged others to approach such medications with caution and to carefully weigh their options with medical professionals.
A Widely Used Medication
Originally developed to treat Type 2 Diabetes, Ozempic belongs to a class of drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists. In recent years, it has gained widespread attention for its weight loss effects.
Like all medications, it comes with known side effects — and experts stress the importance of using it only under proper medical supervision.
The drug’s manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, said it is investigating the case.
In a statement, the company expressed condolences to the family and emphasized that the medication has been extensively studied, with a well-established safety profile when used as directed.
A Personal Warning
For Lesley, the loss is deeply personal — and the questions remain unanswered.
“He was my soulmate,” she said. “We had 21 wonderful years together.”
Now, she hopes sharing his story will encourage others to be cautious and informed when making decisions about their health.
While no direct link has been confirmed, the sudden and tragic sequence of events has left one message clear: always consult medical professionals carefully, understand the risks, and never ignore sudden symptoms.
