Legendary actor Alec Guinness, who played Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars, reportedly earned around $95 million from the franchise thanks to a unique contract deal — despite appearing on screen for less than 20 minutes.

A reluctant Obi-Wan

Before joining Star Wars, Guinness was already an acclaimed actor, known for films like The Bridge on the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia. He even won an Academy Award during his career.

But he was not impressed by the sci-fi project.

In letters written at the time, he reportedly described the script as “fairy-tale rubbish” and complained about the dialogue, calling it “pretty ropey.”

Even while filming, he admitted he disliked the experience and later said the movie made him feel like “a caged animal for the special effects.”

The contract that changed everything

Despite his doubts, Guinness agreed to a deal that would ultimately define his financial legacy.

He reportedly negotiated:

  • An upfront payment of $150,000
  • A percentage of the film’s earnings

That decision proved extremely lucrative.

His deal included around 2.25% of the film’s gross revenue, meaning he continued earning money long after the film’s release — including from re-releases and ongoing screenings.

From skepticism to massive success

Star Wars became a global phenomenon, earning hundreds of millions at the box office and evolving into one of the most successful franchises in history.

While Guinness was initially hesitant and even encouraged his character’s early exit from the series, the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi became one of the most iconic in film history.

A complicated legacy

Despite his frustration with the role, director George Lucas praised Guinness after his death in 2000, calling him a “great artist” and crediting him with helping shape the tone of the film.

In the end, Guinness’s Obi-Wan Kenobi performance not only became legendary — it also became one of the most profitable acting roles of all time.
