Hayden Panettiere is opening up about a deeply painful moment involving her mother that she says permanently changed their relationship.

During a recent appearance on Jay Shetty’s podcast, the actress reflected on growing up as a child star and how her mother, Lesley Vogel, also managed her career for years.

‘I Just Wanted Her to Be My Mom’

Panettiere revealed she began working in entertainment as an infant and eventually felt more like part of a business operation than a child.

As she grew older, she said the line between family and work became increasingly blurred, explaining that she often viewed her mother more as a boss than a parent.

At 19, while filming the hit series Heroes, Panettiere decided she no longer wanted her mother managing her career and hoped the change would help repair their relationship.

“I just want you to be my mom,” the actress recalled telling her.

The Comment That Stayed With Her

According to Panettiere, her mother responded with just three words: “You owe me.”

The actress admitted the comment deeply affected her and left her questioning what her mother meant and whether their relationship had become centered around money and career success.

Panettiere said she had hoped ending the professional arrangement would create space for a healthier mother-daughter connection, but instead she felt emotionally abandoned.

Struggles Behind Child Stardom

Elsewhere in the interview, Panettiere reflected on the pressures of becoming financially successful at such a young age.

She claimed she was frequently reminded that her acting career helped support household expenses and family costs, something she says created emotional pressure and confusion while growing up.

The actress also spoke candidly about feeling responsible for those around her long before she was emotionally ready.

She described moving out at 18 not as an act of independence, but as a form of survival.

Family Pain and Public Reflection

Panettiere also became emotional discussing guilt surrounding her late brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, who died in 2023 at age 28.

She recalled painful comments she says were made about her career keeping the family apart during his childhood, adding that despite her success, she “never asked” for the pressures that came with fame.

Her mother, Lesley Vogel, recently addressed their estrangement publicly, saying she chose “no contact” after years of personal struggles within the family.

The actress’s emotional interview has sparked wider conversations online about the hidden pressures faced by child actors and the complicated relationships that can develop behind the scenes of early fame.
