A shooting outside an Islamic center in San Diego left five people dead Monday after two teenage suspects allegedly opened fire near the mosque before later being found dead inside a nearby vehicle.
Police confirmed that three adult men connected to the mosque were killed in the attack, including a security guard praised by authorities for taking action that may have prevented even more casualties.
What Happened at the Islamic Center
The shooting occurred shortly before noon outside the Islamic Center of San Diego, one of the city’s largest mosques. Officers responding to emergency calls arrived within minutes and launched an active shooter response.
Authorities later located the two suspects, believed to be teenagers, dead from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds inside a vehicle not far from the scene.
Security Guard Credited With Saving Lives
Police Chief Scott Wahl described the mosque security guard’s actions as “heroic,” saying he helped contain the situation near the front entrance and likely prevented a much larger tragedy.
Children attending classes at the center’s school were safely evacuated during the chaos, and officials confirmed no students were harmed.
Investigators Looking Into Hate Crime Motive
Law enforcement officials are treating the shooting as a potential hate crime because the attack targeted an Islamic center. Investigators also reported finding hateful language connected to one of the weapons and references to racial extremism in material allegedly left behind by a suspect.
Authorities say the investigation remains active as federal and local agencies continue examining the suspects’ motives and online activity.
Community Leaders Condemn Violence
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria called the shooting “a violent act of hate” and said attacks targeting people based on religion or identity would not be tolerated.
California Governor Gavin Newsom also condemned the violence, stating that worshippers should never fear for their safety while practicing their faith.
Muslim advocacy organizations and local religious leaders expressed shock over the attack while emphasizing the Islamic Center’s long history of community outreach and interfaith programs.
Mosque Known for Community Outreach
The Islamic Center of San Diego serves as both a place of worship and an educational center, offering religious studies and language classes for children and adults.
Community members described the mosque as welcoming and active in promoting understanding between different faith groups through public events and educational programs.
Investigation Continues
Police say one suspect’s mother had reported her son missing earlier that same day, warning authorities that firearms and a vehicle were also missing from the home.
Officials continue investigating what led to the attack and whether warning signs were missed before the shooting unfolded.
