Hayden Panettiere is opening up further about a disturbing experience she says happened when she was 18 years old during a celebrity yacht trip in the South of France.
In her newly released memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, the actress expands on an incident she recently described publicly as “shocking” during a podcast appearance earlier this month.
Panettiere Says Trusted Friend Led Her Into Situation
According to Panettiere, the incident took place aboard a luxury yacht filled with celebrities, parties, and wealthy guests.
She writes that a woman she deeply trusted approached her during dinner and asked her to follow her downstairs to meet someone.
Panettiere says she was then brought into a private cabin where she found a well-known British singer-songwriter lying shirtless in bed beneath the covers.
Actress Describes Feeling Trapped and Disconnected
The actress recalled feeling stunned and emotionally detached after allegedly being encouraged to get into bed with the singer before being left alone in the room.
While she did not publicly identify the man involved, Panettiere described the experience as deeply unsettling and said she quickly realized the situation was far more serious than she initially understood.
“I Wasn’t Fully Aware of What Was Happening”
During a recent podcast interview, Panettiere reflected on how differently she views the situation now compared to when she was 18.
She explained that despite believing she was mature at the time, she now recognizes that young adults are often not fully equipped to process dangerous or manipulative situations.
Panettiere also said there had been no obvious warning signs before the encounter, which made the experience even more shocking for her.
Actress Says She Felt There Was No Escape
One of the most emotional parts of her account involved realizing she felt trapped aboard the yacht and unable to safely leave the situation.
She suggested that others around her appeared unsurprised by what was happening, which intensified her fear and confusion at the time.
Why She Chose Not to Name Anyone
Panettiere explained that she intentionally avoided naming certain people in her memoir because many remain influential figures within the entertainment industry.
She said part of the decision was made to protect herself legally and professionally while still being honest about her experiences.
Memoir Continues Conversations About Young Women in Hollywood
The actress’s revelations are contributing to broader conversations surrounding power imbalances, celebrity culture, and the treatment of young women in the entertainment industry.
In recent years, numerous former child stars and actresses have spoken publicly about experiences involving manipulation, pressure, and unsafe environments early in their careers.
