Rob Base, the influential hip-hop artist best known for the classic hit “It Takes Two,” has died at the age of 59 following a private battle with cancer.
The rapper, born Robert Ginyard, died on Friday surrounded by family, according to a statement shared on his official Instagram account just days after his birthday.

Family announces death
In the emotional tribute posted online, loved ones honored both his music career and personal life.
“Thank you for the music, the memories, and the moments that became the soundtrack to our lives,” the statement read.
“Rob’s music, energy, and legacy helped shape a generation and brought joy to millions around the world.”
The message also described him as “a loving father, family man, friend, and creative force whose impact will never be forgotten.”
The song that changed hip-hop
Rob Base rose to fame in the late 1980s alongside musical partner DJ E-Z Rock after releasing the groundbreaking hit It Takes Two in 1988.
Built around a now-iconic Lyn Collins sample, the track became one of the defining hip-hop records of its era and helped introduce rap music to mainstream dance clubs and pop audiences.
The song reached No. 3 on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart and later earned platinum certification in the United States.
Influence across music and pop culture
Over the years, “It Takes Two” remained one of hip-hop’s most recognizable tracks, sampled and referenced by numerous artists including Snoop Dogg and Black Eyed Peas.
The song also appeared in films, commercials, and video games, including the popular Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas soundtrack.
Its energetic beat and instantly recognizable hook helped cement its reputation as one of the most enduring party anthems in hip-hop history.
Tributes pour in
Following news of his death, tributes from across music, sports, and entertainment quickly flooded social media.
Comedian Dane Cook wrote: “One of my favorite songs ever. Rob Base filled the airwaves with hit music.”
NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders also paid tribute, calling Base “a legend.”
Friendship behind the music
Base and DJ E-Z Rock reportedly became friends as children before forming their influential hip-hop duo.
DJ E-Z Rock, whose real name was Rodney Bryce, died in 2014 due to diabetes-related complications.
In a past interview with Rolling Stone, Base recalled that “It Takes Two” was created almost by accident during a late-night studio session.
“We didn’t think that it would cross over and be as big as it became,” he said at the time.
Legacy in hip-hop history
Music historians widely credit Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock with helping bridge the gap between early hip-hop and mainstream pop success during the late 1980s.
Decades after its release, “It Takes Two” continues to be played at sporting events, clubs, and parties around the world, securing Rob Base’s place as one of rap’s most influential early crossover stars.
