The family of NASCAR champion Kyle Busch has confirmed the cause of his death after the racing star passed away at the age of 41 earlier this week.

In a statement released Saturday, Busch’s family said a medical evaluation determined that severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, leading to rapid and overwhelming complications.

According to the statement shared through Kyle Busch Companies, Busch had been battling worsening symptoms for roughly two weeks before his death.

“The medical evaluation provided to the Busch family concluded that severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming associated complications,” the statement said.

The family also requested continued privacy as they mourn his loss.

Busch died Thursday after being hospitalized the previous evening following a medical emergency in North Carolina.

Health concerns worsened over two weeks

Reports indicate Busch initially believed he was dealing with a severe cold or sinus illness during race week at Watkins Glen earlier in May.

During that event, he reportedly requested medical attention after the race and told his team over the radio that he would “need a shot” from a doctor.

Despite continuing to compete, those around him later said his condition appeared to worsen in the days that followed.

Disturbing details from 911 call

A 911 call made Wednesday afternoon from the General Motors Charlotte Technical Center in Concord described Busch struggling to breathe while lying on a bathroom floor.

The caller reportedly told emergency dispatchers that Busch was coughing up blood, felt extremely hot, and believed he might pass out.

“He is awake. He’s awake on the bathroom floor right now,” the caller said during the emergency call.

Busch was transported to hospital later that evening before his death was announced the following day.
