Chia seeds are widely considered a healthy “superfood,” but experts are warning people not to blindly follow a viral social media trend known as the “chia seed challenge.”
The challenge involves drinking water mixed with large amounts of chia seeds every day for weeks at a time, with many online claiming it works as an “internal cleanse” or rapid weight-loss method.
Health professionals say the trend may come with risks if done improperly.
Why chia seeds are considered healthy
Chia seeds are packed with fiber, protein, omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.
Nutrition experts say they can support digestion, heart health, and blood sugar control while helping people feel fuller for longer.
Some studies have also linked higher fiber intake to reduced risks of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.
The concern experts have with the trend
According to nutritionist Rob Hobson, suddenly consuming large amounts of chia seeds can cause digestive problems, especially for people with sensitive stomachs or IBS.
Adding too much fiber too quickly may lead to bloating, gas, cramping, or discomfort.
Experts are also warning about the seeds’ ability to absorb large amounts of liquid. Chia seeds can absorb up to 12 times their weight in water and expand rapidly.
If eaten dry and followed by water, they may become a choking hazard or potentially create blockages in the digestive system.
For that reason, health professionals recommend soaking chia seeds in liquid before consuming them.
Doctor explains what actually happens in your body
Dr. Karan Raj recently addressed the trend online, explaining that chia seeds can genuinely benefit gut health because of their fiber content.
However, he warned against expecting dramatic overnight results.
“A tablespoon of chia seeds contains around 5g of fiber,” he explained, comparing expectations of instant transformation to expecting a “Greek god physique after a single press-up.”
According to the doctor, the added fiber temporarily feeds healthy gut bacteria, but lasting improvements require long-term dietary habits rather than short-term trends.
He said meaningful health benefits come from consistently maintaining a high-fiber diet over months, not from doing a quick cleanse for a few days.
Experts still say chia seeds can be beneficial
Despite concerns over the viral challenge itself, experts stressed that chia seeds remain a nutritious addition to a balanced diet when consumed properly and in moderation.
Dr. Raj noted that increasing fiber intake can significantly improve long-term health outcomes.
Research has linked higher daily fiber consumption to lower risks of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and even overall mortality.
Nutritionists generally recommend limiting intake to about one or two tablespoons per day and ensuring the seeds are properly soaked before eating or drinking them.
Social media health trends can be misleading
Experts say the popularity of “quick fix” health challenges online can encourage people to overconsume otherwise healthy foods.
While chia seeds themselves are not dangerous for most people, doctors caution that dramatically changing eating habits based on viral trends can sometimes do more harm than good.
The advice from health professionals is simple: enjoy chia seeds as part of a balanced routine — but don’t expect miracles from an internet challenge.
