Mackenzie Shirilla reportedly hoped one of the most prominent advocates for criminal justice reform would help overturn her case. According to newly surfaced jail calls, the Ohio inmate believed Kim Kardashian might be her best chance at securing legal assistance.
Shirilla, now serving a sentence of 15 years to life, was convicted in connection with a 2022 crash that killed her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, 20, and his friend, Davion Flanagan, 19. The case has returned to public attention following the release of Netflix’s documentary The Crash.
Jail Call Revealed Unusual Request
During a recorded phone conversation from jail, Shirilla discussed the possibility of receiving help from Kardashian, who has become well known for her involvement in criminal justice reform efforts.
At one point, Shirilla reportedly joked that she only wore products from Kardashian’s SKIMS clothing brand and hoped that might help get the reality star’s attention.
The conversation has since circulated online, generating renewed interest in the case and Shirilla’s ongoing efforts to challenge her conviction.
Appeal Efforts Have Faced Setbacks
Shirilla was convicted in 2023 after a judge determined that the fatal crash had been intentionally caused. She has consistently maintained her innocence and previously argued that a medical issue may have contributed to the incident.
Her attempts to overturn the conviction have faced significant obstacles. In 2024, an appeal was reportedly rejected after a filing deadline was missed, and courts later upheld that decision.
She remains incarcerated and will not be eligible for parole until 2037.

According to reports citing a source close to Kardashian, the reality star and aspiring lawyer has no plans to become involved in Shirilla’s case.
The source reportedly said Kardashian typically focuses on cases involving alleged wrongful convictions or individuals she believes deserve a second chance after demonstrating rehabilitation.
The source added that Shirilla’s case does not align with the causes Kardashian currently supports.
