Back in 2014, conservationist Paul Rosolie attempted one of the most bizarre wildlife stunts ever televised: allowing himself to be “eaten alive” by a giant green anaconda.
The shocking Discovery Channel special immediately went viral, with viewers stunned that anyone would willingly place themselves in front of one of the largest snakes on Earth.
But according to Rosolie, the terrifying ordeal became far more dangerous than he expected within seconds.
Why He Agreed to Do It
Rosolie, who has spent years working in the Amazon rainforest protecting endangered habitats, said the stunt was designed to bring global attention to rainforest destruction and wildlife conservation.

He believed people had become numb to environmental warnings and wanted to create something dramatic enough to force audiences to pay attention.
So, with a specially designed carbon-fiber protective suit, cameras, and a medical team nearby, he prepared to confront a massive green anaconda in Peru.
The Snake Locked Onto Him Almost Immediately
Covered in pig’s blood to attract the snake, Rosolie approached the enormous female anaconda on all fours in an attempt to imitate prey.
Within moments, the snake lunged at him, wrapping its powerful body around him and beginning to constrict.
“She’s got my arms pinned,” Rosolie reportedly told his team over radio communication as the pressure intensified.
The green anaconda, one of the strongest constrictors in the animal kingdom, continued tightening around his body while attempting to consume him head-first.
Panic Set In Very Quickly
Although Rosolie initially tried to stay calm, things escalated rapidly once the snake tightened around his chest and head.
At one point, he screamed to his crew that he could feel the animal beginning to consume him and urgently called for help.
Crew members immediately rushed in and pulled the snake away before the situation became fatal.
Later, Rosolie admitted he could feel the suit cracking under the pressure and feared his arms were about to break.
The Goal Was Conservation, Not Entertainment
Despite criticism surrounding the stunt, Rosolie insisted the experiment was never meant to harm the snake or create mindless shock value.
He said the real purpose was to show viewers the incredible power of these animals while drawing attention to the destruction of the Amazon rainforest.
Rosolie later explained that extensive precautions were taken, including engineering a suit designed to withstand crushing pressure and digestive fluids.
Viewers Are Still Divided Years Later
More than a decade later, the stunt remains one of Discovery Channel’s most controversial moments.
Some viewers praised Rosolie’s dedication to conservation awareness, while others argued the experiment crossed ethical and safety lines.
Either way, the footage left millions horrified watching just how quickly one of nature’s deadliest predators nearly turned a man into its next meal.
